Canberra's ministers have dug the first hole at the Mitchell depot to mark the beginning of construction for the ACT government's controversial light rail project.

But major track works and landscaping will not begin until late 2016 and completion is planned for 2018.

Melbourne’s E-Class trams – the biggest, safest and most accessible on the network – now have a new home.

Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, joined local Member Robin Scott and the Chair and CEO of Yarra Trams to officially open the new Preston Tram Depot and Workshop today.

The new facility is the product of a $190 million redevelopment of the existing tram depot on St Georges Road.

It was the largest redevelopment ever undertaken of a heritage site while it remained operational in Australia, with Yarra Trams continuing to use it as a heavy maintenance facility throughout construction.

Cairn Cross Civil Engineering Limited and Airquick Limited, working in partnership and on behalf of Network Rail and Arriva Trains Wales, have successfully completed the UK’s most advanced carriage wash system.

This multidisciplinary design and build project was awarded to Cairn Cross Civil Engineering through the development of innovation and value engineering. One of the aspects of value engineering that helped Cairn Cross become the preferred contractor was the use of existing assets and minimising the disruption to day-to-day depot operations.

Alstom introduces second TrainScanner at Oxley, UK

Alstom has launched a second TrainScanner at Oxley depot, near Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, UK.

The move follows the successful testing of a TrainScanner predictive maintenance prototype on Virgin's fleet of Pendolino trains in Manchester. TrainScanner is part of HealthHub solution, which is Alstom's predictive maintenance solution. The device makes it possible to automatically determine the status of rolling stock, infrastructure and signalling.
